Bioengineering - Erosion Control

Bio erosion control uses soft revetment practices to establish native vegetation to support the slope. This vegetation holds the soil in place and grows stronger year after year.

What is Coir?

Coir is the fiber layer that grows between the coconut and its outside husk. The fibers are graded by length and used for products like rugs, baskets, rope, and of course, the fibrous material inserted into our coir logs. This growing medium promotes soil retention, seed propagation, and root growth.

The three systems we pioneered for erosion control are:

- Living Logs - Vegetated Coir Logs

This system evolves instead of degrades. It utilizes vegetated coir logs and an erosion control blanket as soft armor to promote native vegetation. The coir log provides instant erosion control and instant vegetation (You can specify the plants). Our vegetated coir log is manufactured for specific sites, which provides advantages in aesthetic and erosion control. The erosion control blanket holds the seeds in place, protecting them and promoting germination.

- Living Soil Tube

This system is used to encapsulate soil in a geo-textile tube allowing for native species to root into the material strengthening the system as time progresses. Our Living Soil Tube system is used in high flow areas protecting culverts, bridge structures and exposed utility lines. Our Living Soil Tubes have grommets installed to allow for easy anchoring.

- Vegetated Basket

This product allows you to instantly introduce a micro collection of wetland species. Our Vegetated Baskets can be mixed into existing rip-rap as a BMP to introduce desirable native species into scrubbing zones.

The benefits of these systems are:

- Instant vegetation and instant erosion control
- Root strength provides superior shear stress protection
- Scrubs out pesticides/fertilizers from the waterway
- Natural goose barrier
- Native vegetation means robust growth and less maintenance
- Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies
- Increases fishing potential
- Slows water flow and protects exposed root structures
- Captures soil particles within the coir log
- Native vegetation means robust growth and less maintenance
- No heavy machinery needed
- Customizable to suit your project needs
- Saves trees, bridges, and pathways
